Installation Instruction

Thanks for buying D’Arts wall coverings which require special care & attention to install.

Before proceeding please check you have the design layout and the correct number of panels, lay out the panels supplied & check these against the design layout provided. If you are uncertain of anything, have any questions or require any advice on fitting please contact us at D’Arts for advice – we will be happy to help.

Please note unfortunately D’Arts will not be able to take responsibility for any wall covering installed incorrectly if our help & advice is not requested or followed.

D’Arts wall coverings are supplied with an additional 5cm at the top & bottom of each panel and are delivered uncut at approximately 93cm wide which will be trimmed to 91.5cm when hung. The additional 1.5cm is called the selvedge or overlap.

Step one: Wall preparation – Please do not apply over old wall coverings.

Always ensure wall surface is clean, free from grease & mildew, dry & structurally sound. The wall should be as smooth as possible to achieve best results.

Cracks, holes and defects in the surface should be filled with a good quality filler and when dry, any rough spots should be sanded until smooth. Any dirt & loose material should be removed.

A good quality primer/sealer should be applied to the entire wall surface using a roller. Allow time to dry, then lightly grit the wall surface totally with sandpaper to make sure the wall is smooth and clean.

To achieve the best results, we would recommend that a good quality lining paper is applied to the wall before hanging your D’Arts wall covering. And, if the wall is not straight or is cracked please apply a good quality lining paper first.

Create a plumb line to ensure you have a straight line to begin hanging your wall covering.

Step two: Measure wall and panel height.

D’Arts supply each panel with an additional 5cm top & bottom so please leave this extra 5cm additional on each panel for trimming when pasting to the wall.

Step three: Pasting wall covering on the wall.

Please note there is no recommended standard time between applying adhesive to the wall and then applying the wall covering to it, the time allowed depends on the temperature and humidity, as well as the glue itself.

As this timing is critical, we always recommend that you first test an offcut before hanging the actual panels. When the offcut is pasted on the wall successfully then proceed.

Apply a coat of adhesive evenly to the area to be covered. Wait for several minutes after applying the adhesive the wall and make sure the adhesive is not too wet to avoid splashes on the panel.

Checking the design layout supplied choose the panel to start with and roll it out first. The position of the first panel is critical and determines the overall look of the completed walling so take time to place it accurately.

Applying first panel to the wall; start from top to bottom, carefully and slowly. Make sure the edges are straight to the plump line. Be sure to use a clean slightly damp sponge to eliminate bubbles and ridges working downwards & outwards.

Please do not apply the whole panel to the wall unless you are familiar with hanging this type of wallpaper as the bubbles and ridges will be difficult to be eliminated.

Take care not to overwork each panel as this could result in stretching, making it harder to line up the next panel. If the wall covering gets too wet the paper or silk may delaminate and the colour on the panel may be wiped off.

Step four: Trim the paper.

After hanging the first panel as described above with the 1.5cm selvage intact, apply the second panel overlapping the previous panel, the second panel will overlap the first panel by 1.5cm. Match the two panels so the pattern repeat matches perfectly side to side.

Now trim the excess from the top & bottom of each panel. After trimming the top and bottom, carefully cut vertically along the edge of the second panel and through the first panel thus carefully removing the 1.5cm overlap / selvedge from the first panel. Having carefully peeled off the selvage from the first panel from the wall gently set the seam where the two panels meet. Care should be taken to avoid scoring the wall surface while cutting seams.

Carefully remove any excess paste from the front of the wall covering using a clean damp sponge. Take great care as too much rubbing or cleaning may remove the colour and pattern.

Carefully repeat step three and four above when applying subsequent panels.
